This is the second instalment in a great trilogy called Dark Materials. It was a delight to read.
The 2 main Characters in this book are Lyra and Will. Lyra Accompanied by her faithfull companion Pantalaimon and her new friend Will travel to a place in Italy called citta'gazze which is haunted by Spectres that attack adults and drain their life force but legend has it that there is a knife that will protect the adults from the spectres. Will befriends 2 local children whose brother Lorenzo happens to be the keeper of the "Subtle knife" And in a fight in Citta'gazze's main tower Will kills Lorenzo and becomes the keeper of the knife that can cut through the fabric of adjoining worlds but in the fight Will loses 2 of his finger which is a sign of the knife keeper. Also Lyra finds out a dark secret. If you have read the first one I personally suggest that you go out and either loan or buy this book. And if you haven't I suggest you go down to your local bookstores find a copy of Northern Lights which is the first book in the series then get the Subtle Knife sit down and have a read.Who knows you might enjoy it.

The Subtle Knife is an excellent book that leaves you crying out for more. Will and Lyra discover and explore many new things. During their adventures a strange and precious bond forms between the two friends. They are soon to learn that they both play a great role in the future of all worlds. Many die, leaving mysteries unsolved. This is a have to read book. If you choose to read this book you should also read The Golden Compass and the Amber Spyglass.
