Page 3 of 3 Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson
Submitted by Chriss Wallwork (Mar 27, 2000)Erikson's Gardens of the Moon is one of the best novels I have ever read. The characters were brilliant, the land immense and amazing, the magic concepts original. This book sucks you right into a world which is strange, yet written so well it is almost familiar, and when you depart leaves you wanting more. If you enjoy a great read with lots of action, magic, and spectacular characters than this book if for you! All I want to know is when does the sequel come out? Submitted by Wendy (Mar 13, 2000)This book is a challenge to read. It is long and it does contain a lot of characters. It's also one of the best novels I've read in a long time.
It takes the reader places that other authors only hinted at. There are reasons and systems behind everything, especially magic. The character scope is so huge, that it does get a trifle confusing. But you know that no character is wasted, no incident is just throwaway. Everything has consequences and ties up.
Comparisons are made to other fantasy authors, but what Erickson does here is special. He is orginal and avoids every pitfall and cliche that a fantasy writer can fall into. His characters do not wander about the continent and live happily ever after. This is only a small part of what makes this book so worthwhile. Submitted by Steve Quanborough (Oct 06, 1999)This book was raved about before it's release in Australia , "as good as Jordan" etc. Of my fellow fantasy fans who have spent the time to start this book no one has finished it with most throwing the book away in disgust around the 100 -150 page mark. Why? Quite frankly the author has thrown too many characters , lands etc in the book that the reader who is anticipating a captive read struggles to understand what is going on - very mismatched. Maybe other readers who have perserved longer may have found the info. falling into place, but who wants to wait until 1/3 of the book to grasp a basic understanding! What a waste of time! Submitted by Keyoke (Oct 04, 1999)Gardens of the moon is the new book by Canadian author Steven Erikson. This book is utterly amazing. You thought Jordan, Martin, etc were complex. They have barely touched on this man. Erikson sets up such a incredible world, you'll die for more. The story itself? It's so complex, I can barely summarize it, but, to make it quick, it's about the Malazan Empire, and it's struggle to remain the power to be. Opposing the Empire, forces beyond your imangination. The characters are simply great, with, none being good or evil. Well, some are darn right out evil..
One of the best books I have read, unfortunately, it seems only avail in the U.K. for now.
