Submitted by Adam (May 20, 2006)I just don't know how he does it. I know the story's not exactly great. I know he heaps members of each race into one category. I know that the books are inconsistent, sometimes widly. I know the plotline is sometimes so unbelievable as to be absurd. I know he sometimes doesn't even bother giving his characters motivation to do things, instead pushing them to doing it for absolutely no reason.
But you know what? I don't care.
This is because the man is a literary genius. His writing style is insane. I've never seen anything like it. No one writes a story like this man. After the first book, I actually stopped caring about what he was writing, and more about the way he was writing it. I just don't know how he does it.
I don't care about the glaring inconsistencies, and the weak story. This series is well worth the read, just to get lost in Eddings' flowing style of writing. Try it. Overlook all possible plot errors, and just read, and you'll see what I mean. Submitted by Kristin (Jan 01, 2006)This is by far the most enjoyable read Ever! I have read the series twice, and am going for round three.....
The characters are true, the depth of interaction is great, and Eddings shows a real insight into people. His sense of humor is the best thing about it. And is anyone else's favorite character Silk?????
Definitely a must-read for anyone and everyone! Submitted by Anonymous (Oct 24, 2005) Pawn of Prophecy is a very easy-to-read book, and has a tantalizing array of very thought-out characters. My favourite is, of course, the protagonist Garion. He reminds me of any normal teenage boy, but he's trapped in some gripping quest he has very little knowledge of. It is a great book, and I recommend any fantasy lover to read it at least once! Submitted by Krista (Sep 26, 2005)The Belgariad series and its companion, the Mallorean series, was great to read. It is a page turner, and a suspence bringer. It is intriging for young adults such as myself, and adult readers the same. Even though it is a long series, I have read it a few times, and it still brings the same excitment that it did the first time i read it. I recommend this book to all fantasy lovers. Submitted by Brid (Feb 09, 2005)I actually like this book a lot, since it brings the series to another level. Each book in the Belgariad shows development in the characters - Garion mostly, of course - as well as a "thickening plot". There are times when I find Eddings' writing a little clumsy or too Tolkien-imitative. But the books grow on you and as far as classic fantasy goes, these are among the best. Simply written, at times witty, with people and cultures one can relate too. Also, it HAS AN END. I HATE authors that churn up stuff endlessly, so at last there's no point and so many characters and sub-plots that the original idea is completely gone. For heaven's sake, just start a new series! But I can warmly recommend Eddings' Belgariad...
