Page 1 of 1 The Circle Trilogy by Ted Dekker
Submitted by astraith@mac.com (Jan 26, 2007)Ted Dekker is a writer for the movie generation. His writings are fast paced, and read almost like a movie would. The Circle Trilogy are his only work of fantasy/Sci Fi, and yet I consider them some of the best. And here is why:
Most trilogies have the same feel to each book in the series. However, The Circle Trilogy is entirely different. First off, it feels like it’s one big arching story – which it is, with each book taking off right where the other left – but it’s more then that. And since the entire trilogy was released in one year – the huge cliffhangers didn’t really bother you. But there is another difference that makes this a different cookie then other trilogies – and that’s simply that each book has its own unique feel. To explain, let me tell you about the story itself.
Imagine being hit in the head with a bullet. Then waking up into a different reality. In this reality, there are bats that want to eat you, a Black Forest that has a creepy feel, and a strange and surreal forest called The Colored Forest. These people don’t know anything of sadness or anything bad – they are all always happy. All the time. Even stranger, they call your memories of where you came from – lets call it “the other reality” for sake of reference – they call those memories “from The Histories”.
Now it gets even weirder. Every time you go to sleep, you go back and forth between this reality and the other reality. Two worlds, and one hero to save them all.
Now, back on track. They each have their own unique feel to them. For example, Black was more drama based fantasy. Red, the second book, is more action packed – while White is more, well, a mix of everything. Also, in Black, it feels that you want to read more about the other reality, yet during Red and White, you want to read about the “colored reality”.
And the story telling is unbelievable – any man who can plot such a big, gaping story and be able to keep up with all the characters must be a master storyteller. Even more, he has continued this series into another one, called Project Showdown – and what do you have it, the first book was called Showdown.
This series is a great one to say the least, but isn’t everyones cup of tea. It seems you either love it – or you don’t. No “it was okay”, or anything in between. My mom loved it, but she thought it was too stressful – because White was full of twists and turns, like a rollercoaster. These books are defiantly worth checking out. I loved them, and hopefully so will you.
