They're there in the Mistborn series: main character with a troubled past, raised in obscurity, discovers something singular within themselves and eventually saves the world. Love? Danger? Fighting? Magic? All there.
What sets Brandon Sanderson apart from the rest is his world-building, his attention to detail, his 'oomph' (for lack of a better word). The man can write his a** off. He has a way of presenting the same old elements with just enough of a new twist to make them feel fresh. He did it in Elantris, his first novel. He does it in the Mistborn trilogy, which has since become one of my favorite trilogies. I love the characters, the world, the powers, the feel of the story. I found myself wishing I could find the magic door that allowed me to step inside this world. I want to be able to burn metals like an Allomancer. I want to help Elend solidify his kingdom. I want to see koloss - from a distance. I want to sit around drinking with Breeze and trade philosiphical arguments with Ham. I can think of no greater compliment to Sanderson than to say: I want to live in your worlds.
Definitely a must-read trilogy, and definitely an author to watch!
