Submitted by Nick (Mar 07, 2008)This series is an excellent and thought-provoking tale of modern technology in a medieval world. That is the idea behind the book. A group of 70's era soldiers from Earth are rescued from impending annihilation by an alien race, and deposited upon a medieval planet settled by humans from Earth of earlier eras. Their charge: Conquer, and grow the rare narcotic that can only be grown on this chaotic planet, for the benefit of their alien 'rescuers'.
No spoilers there, as that's just the first chapter or two.
This series is military/political sci-fi, very well written, detailing the exploits of these soldiers as they try to create some order out of the chaotic planet they have been dumped upon. Despite the fact that the soldiers' weapons and tactics, state of the art 30 years ago, is a bit dated, the story is nevertheless very compelling. Sadly, the third and thus far final book in the series doesn't provide a real end, meaning that there was doubtless a fourth book that wasn't written.
Definitely a series worth reading.
