I discovered this series quite accidentally and i was simply amazed by the depth of powerful emotions jumping out of every page. The plot is absolutely refreshing, with minimal cliches, and the characters are magnificent. This series inspires a love for nature and for humans that gripps your soul.I've read quite a few fantasy series, some of the same level (e.g. The WOT,The Belgariad etc.) and some much worse, and i Can't understand why this series, a magnificent one on my opinion, does not receive the proper attention. I reccomend it warmly for all those who seek sth. new.

With the Wars of Light and Shadow Janny Wurts has pushed fantasy to new boundaries. No black and white, over in a few weeks, everything lovely again trilogies here.

This is powerful stuff, featuring some of the most fully realised and compelling characters I have ever come across as well as intense writing and heart-breaking moments.

Janny is the only writer I've come across that has me, however much I want to press on with the story, having to stop every few pages to absorb the ramifications of events.

Anyway, the story:

Two half-brothers, who are each gifted with elemental mastery (of light and shadow respectively) battle a monster, which curses them to hate each other to the point where they seek to destroy each other, regardless of their own safety or that of those around them.

The Curse gradually twists them, one (all of whose actions are governed by the pursuit of justice) begins an obsessive quest to kill the other, whose guilt cripples him almost to the point of inaction.

Classic themes of appearances versus reality, the nature of leadership and motivation are dealt with in a new and fresh way. All done within a complex world of competing factions, real people and heart-breaking creatures.

Bitter-sweet, poignant, breath-taking genre re-defining stuff.
