Rebecca Neason is the author of the Star Trek novel "Guises of the Mind" as well as two Highlander novels. With "The Thirteenth Scroll" she has however created her own world for us to enjoy.

The old King of Aghamore is dead and all of the nine Barons contend for the throne. The evil sorceress Aurya is set on making her lover, Baron Giraldus, the next King. However the forbidden prophesies of Tambryn, the Thirteenth Scroll tells of a child that has to be destroyed if she shall achieve her goal. At the same time an unlikely set of companions set out on a quest to find the child that can save the Kingdom.

The story is very much the standard epic fantasy story. Good battles evil and they all go on a quest to save the world. It does also have a touch of romance. If I had to categorize the book I would say that it is clearly targeted at a Young Adult audience. It's also the first book in a series, but it has an ending that stands perfectly on its own.

Rebecca Neason portrays characters that at the same time as they are set out to do great deeds they are also fighting with their own inner doubts and problems. Especially do I find the blind healer Lysandra as well as the evil sorceress Aurya to be characters that the author has put a lot of work into creating.

All in all a very nice story, nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to Fantasy literature as it follows the basic formula, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth reading. Altogether a very well written story.
