This story has all the markings of a published book. If I could suggest something though, the foolhardy and optimistic youth sometimes comes across as an older bumbling man. I am not sure this is what you are trying to portray? The visual image is that of the main character of the cartoon version of sleepy hollow. Other than that, your first chapter grabbed and held me, and if it were a book, I would buy it.
