Comments to The game: World Domination! by Art Pacheco

Back to story

Submitted by suibom (Sep 24, 2009)

This story was written for the September Flash Fiction contest with the theme of Super Powers. I knew didn't want to create another cliched super hero story and wasn't quite sure how to proceed. I was searching for another meaning to "Super Powers" when the story stuck me as I passed by some of the games in the house. Super Powers would be the "World Superpowers" for a board game I called World Domination - your basic strategy zone conquering game. ... "He felt the power coursing through his veins. ... Whatever the reason, it was his now. All of it!" ... The story would be of a boy who has never been able to beat his friends at the game - being too young and flighty of mind (which is not a bad thing by any means). Having recently moved and not yet found a base of friends, he picks up the board game again, intent on finally winning! ... "The power; he could shift continents. ... The men followed him without question, but now he could lead them personally; the devastating spearhead that would drive his ambition home. It was going to be a long, bloody war; nothing worth having comes easy." ... As he sets up the board (shifting continents) his mind begins to flitter into its imaginings. With the pieces in place, he relishes the prospect of winning the game the way he always felt he could, outright and complete. ..."The cheering of his men rose to such a climax that the world to shook in fear. He raised his hand and they fell silent at once, ready to strike, waiting for the battle cry from their leader." ... Cheering himself on with the classic self roar that children do, he slaps the ground in claps, causing the board to shake. He raises his first piece up, ready to make the opening strategic strike. ... "Dinner!" ... Unfortunately, even the greatest strategist must heed the call of mom to the dinner table.
