Comments to The Wizard and Shadows (with translation of ancient tongue) by Carin Marais

Back to story

Submitted by Mark Dreyer (Sep 12, 2010)

Carin: This (In English, for the monitors), is the start of a whale of a tale! I am electrified with the use of Afrikaans as the 'Old Tongue'. It wouldn't have occurred to me, & I suppose it wouldn't fly so well in our community if only because to us it isn't so persuasively 'old'. It would appeal to readers even more if you choose words & sentences closer to English or Scottish, which we can do. This would contribute to a spooky partial lucidity in the reader's mind, so close our Taal is to Middle English. Let me know if you're taking this further. I'm tempted to try the same myself. By the way, I would leave out the apostrophe's; they break your reader's speed. Groete, Mark Dreyer.
