Comments to Toll the Hounds by Steven Erikson

Submitted by Adrian Ben Delat (Nov 15, 2008)

Reading this review...I couldn't possibly agree more, you are truly a master connoisseur of fantasy literature. I was shocked and pleased to read that you too read the last 300 pages in a single sitting like I had. The first two-thirds are very slow, and focus mostly on new characters introduced within Toll the Hounds. However, when I hit the climax, or climaxes since you could say there are dozens, I fell into this headlong rush from 12am to 4am without moving a muscle. I felt bad because I knew I would have to wait another year to continue but I simple could not stop myself. Many revelations and one INCREDIBLY terrible loss that will have many people grieving. As stated, this book doesn't answer questions or resolve anything, in fact the plot thickens further and one could easily put this at the beginning of a new series rather than the end. I am mystified by Erikson's daring and it makes one wonder how he could pull off a final ending but after reading these eight books, I have supreme confidence in his ability. Counting the days till Dust of Dreams. ps. There is a poem at the very end of the book that completely captures the thematic direction of the series as a whole. He couldn't have done better, the negatives and losses are absolutely necessary. It's the bard's curse, "Every tale is a gift." Thank you.

I hate you! Great review, I just ordered the book, and this made me wish it was here already.
