SUMMARY: A girl finds her love in her best friend, and the worst enemy in her childhood crush...

They were on picnic. They looked at each other, then turned away, each going the other way. Then he turned around. He stopped. He looked at her, and kept on looking at her till she was out of sight. She bumped into her best friend, Robert. She smiled at him shyly. ?Hi!? They both said to each other shyly. Running a hand through his hair, he motioned her to come inside the hut. ?There?s so much to catch up. We have so much to tell each other. And what better time than today? Go on, tell me what you did these 18 years. Is it really that long since we met? It seems yesterday when we played and studied in the same school together. I missed you so much these years. All the time I used to think of you and the others. The playground. The way we used to tease each other. And that you always used to sit alone during lunch break.? He said to her when they were seated on the stairs at the back of the hut. ?You really remember all that? I do too, though it?s becoming unclear now, the memories are fading. I came back a long time ago, but then see that I tried contacting you as soon as I came back, along with some more of our old classmates. But your number had changed. And see where we stand now. Our parents?Hard to believe?? She said, stopping at the sensitive subject between them, and shaking her head. ?Actually, it?s me who contacted your mom first. I had gone to the US, and when I came back here, I had absolutely no friends: they all had dispersed. Then I opened my diary and your name with your number was there. I thought, ?why not?? So I called at your house, but you weren?t there. Your mom recognised me, and gave me your mobile number. But I didn?t try calling you. I didn?t have enough courage. Mom started getting suspicious of me. Then she caught me one day looking at all our old photos. She sat with me, and I started talking of everyone. Only I mentioned just one girl: you.? He looked down, embarrassed. ?That?s when she thought that something was fishy. She called your mom then, and I have no idea as to what they talked about. The result is in front of you.? He finished, not looking at her. ?Hey, it?s alright. We only tried to protect our friendship. And our parents are trying to secure it! Never mind! We?ll think of something to get out of this mess.? They sat there, totally unaware that Bert was listening to every word they uttered. Kate stood up to go and take a walk. Robert asked her if she needed company. She refused politely, saying she had to be alone for a while. Robert nodded his head, smiling. She smiled back and turned to go.
?Kate!? A voice behind her made her turn around. She frowned, turning back. Bert held her arm tightly, not letting her go. ?Let go of my arm right now!? She said fiercely. She looked at him so fiercely that he let go. ?Don?t try coming back in my life! You bring back the most painful memories. Stay away from me, my family, my friends, and everyone and everything that is associated with me!? She said angrily. She turned to go, leaving him open-mouthed, trying to say something, but unable to do so. A hand on her shoulder made her turn around and punch?Robert! She gasped.
