(Page 2 of 6) The Lost Vampire, Part One by Carolyn NortherlandHis hair was long and very dark, maybe black, and was pulled back in a messy ponytail. He wore a tight short-sleeved black t-shirt and a loose pair of jeans. Emily probably would have found him attractive if he hadn't been so darn creepy.
"Oh, well, I wanted to drink it." The man said matter-of-factly and tried to hand the bag to Emily once again.
Emily's jaw dropped. Okay, she thought, time to get out of here. She tried to turn and run again, but the man grabbed her arm and spun her back around gently. She looked angrily into his face, but her anger and fear were forgotten when she saw his expression. He looked desperate, almost afraid.
"Please, don't leave me!" the man released Emily's arm, and dropped the blood bag on the pavement, looking shocked at his actions. He covered his eyes with one hand and turned away, a pained expression on his face. Emily looked at his back, not quite knowing what to make of his outburst. After a few seconds, pity got the best of her and she reluctantly moved to his side.
"I'll stay, but you have to tell me why in the world you want to drink that blood." Emily stooped to take the blood bag in her hands. The man looked up, his eyes red with distress.
"Well, I haven't eaten in so long, and the boy told me to come here to find some blood that was already prepared. I don't know anything about this strange place. I was awoken only a few hours ago." As he said all this, he wouldn't look into Emily's face. Emily looked at him, not understanding anything that he said.
"What...who...why?" Emily could only stammer out a few words at a time. She was completely lost. She stood there, staring off into space for a few seconds until she could say something else. "Okay, explain this to me again, except this time tell me what in the hell you are." Her eyebrows were raised, and she looked at the man as if he was some strange wild animal.
"I'm sorry," the man turned and regained his composure. "I haven't introduced myself at all. I am known as Gray."
"Okay," Emily said slowly, "but what are you?"
Gray smiled slowly and laughed slightly at Emily's question. "What do you mean 'what' am I?"
"Well, I don't know many people who go around drinking blood."
At this, Gray gave a short, disbelieving laugh. "Why, I'm a vampire." Gray held his hand to his chest and smiled as he said this, and looked at Emily as if it were she who was from a different world.
Chapter two
Emily stared hard at Gray, not fully comprehending what he had just said. "You're a...what?" Emily asked, hoping that she heard wrong.
"I said I'm a vampire." Gray's smile disappeared as he noticed Emily's expression. "Why do you look at me that way?"
Emily's jaw was hanging open and her eyes were wide. Without answering Gray's question, Emily turned away from him and sank to the ground, leaning against the wall of the hospital. Her thoughts raced as she tried to find a rational explanation for the man's absurd claim. Maybe he was an escaped patient from the mental hospital, or maybe he was playing a cruel joke on her, or maybe it was just a wild dream.
