He was well aware that he might yet have to assert his dominance to keep the cutthroats at bay and squelch any who harbored thoughts of rebellion.

A silent white-robed form entered the hall, passing through the rows of long wooden tables filled with hungry mercenaries. Fear filled the men upon seeing the figure approach. Many averted their eyes from the shaman, pretending to look busy by reaching for a wine-filled flagon or tearing at a loaf of bread as if those simple acts would somehow save them from his wrath should he desire to direct it at them. The summoner ascended the steps from the hall floor below to reach his master's throne, presenting himself with a bow, his face hidden from view by the pointed hood he wore.

"Good day to you, Kindred Bane. Have you picked the men who will accompany us on our journey south?" Mortlok asked his advisor.

Bane nodded and handed his master a rolled parchment on which the mute had previously prepared his communication.

Mortlok unraveled the document and hastily read it.

My Lord,

As you commanded, I have selected ten men to accompany us. The chosen have been informed and are prepared to travel at a moment's notice. As you requested, the fugitive from Grimstadt, Keldrak, will be left in charge while we are away. The men have been made aware that leaving the keep is forbidden with the exception of hunting expeditions within the forests of the valley below. All is in readiness.

There is much whispering among the hirelings. The losses sustained during our raid on the merchant caravan were higher than anticipated. Accordingly, morale is low. I recommend caution when dealing with the men.

At Your Command,

Kindred Bane

Mortlok pondered the uncomfortable situation. "Your advice is most appreciated. I will not ignore the wisdom in your words. I too have sensed the building bravado among the men since our return from the wastelands. Its continuation will not be tolerated," Mortlok said to his servant. Rising from the throne, he donned the baldric on which hung his great sword and walked down the steps to the hall floor. To get the attention of everyone within the crowded room, he stood on one of the tables. The noisy chamber quickly came to a hushed silence as all eyes fell upon him. "Men, a few of us will soon be leaving the keep to gather information in the civilized kingdoms of the southlands. Our presence here must be concealed at all costs. Should the fortress come under watch, you are to remain unseen; and if that is not possible, then you are to slay the trespassers. Master Keldrak will shepherd you while we are away. We have been successful thus far. Let us continue in this tradition," he said, his charismatic voice filling the room. Mortlok spotted the mercenary he had appointed to look after things in his absence and tossed him a large pouch filled with gems and coin, the leather bag landing on the table in front of the bandit.
