Owak had been one of the few planets at the periphery of the empire and even if the inhabitants of the planet could have known of an attack days or weeks earlier, it was highly unlikely that the empire would have sent its fleet to aid them. They were not one of the important planets of the empire.

He was the only survivor of the catastrophe that befell Owak. No other human or vampire lived to tell what really happened fifty years ago. Zin had acquired new powers that he may never entirely understand. He had not aged a day during the past fifty years and he had been able to perform high-level spells that would have been to difficult for him even after he attended the Wizards' Academy.

Zin stood there and felt tears running down his cheeks, clouding his vision and interrupting the flood of memories. He began to walk down the hill towards the city.

There might just be some of them left, he thought.

The ruins were now covered by vegetation. In the span of fifty years, no human or vampire had ever set foot on Owak again. Perhaps even the Empire did not bother to investigate what had happened the night that the planet fell into the hands of vampires. The Empire rarely bothered to reclaim planets that its leaders did not deem important.

Zin did not recognize anything, not even the street he used to walk on everyday. He stopped before a large field in the middle of the city. It had once been a park and at the center was a vast field of sunflowers.

Zin felt relieved. The sunflowers had survived even though the city had been burned fifty years ago. Zin levitated toward the field and descended in the middle of the large collection of sunflower plants. The sunflower was Zanno's favorite plant. It was the symbol of the city of Leda. Zin liked sunflowers because they were the only one that survived of all the plants he took care off. Even cacti died under his care, but amazingly sunflowers seemed to thrive.

He began gathering the the flowers and when he had collected as much as his hands could carry, he carried them toward a grassy knoll and spread them there as he lied down staring at the sky. As he was about to close his eyes, he sensed the presence of someone close by. The blood-spell gave him at least some of Seb's abilities and at that moment he could smell fresh blood.

Wrapping a weave of air around him, he rose up and hovered a few feet above the ground. He focused all his senses to find where the smell of fresh blood was coming from. Near the field of sunflowers, he could see man standing there. He wore the white uniform of a Vampire Hunter.

Before Zin could react, the man started running toward him at an incredible speed that only a trained Vampire Hunter could muster. Zin descended on the ground. He always had trouble casting spells in mid-air.

Zin began casting a wind-spell. He could at least trap the Vampire Hunter in mid-air without injuring him. The bubble of air he had created came in contact with the Vampire Hunter a few feet before he could reach Zin.
