(Page 1 of 2) Woven In Memory by Richard RidyardSUMMARY: This is the third part of the puzzle. It's just a normal day off work for two neighbours isn't it?Woven In Memory
By Richard Ridyard
It was 7.30 in the morning and Mathew woke up at the time he usually goes to work. He looks at his alarm clock and sees the time,
‘Damn alarm clock waking me up on my day off.'
Mat looks confused momentarily as next to his alarm clock is a pair of glasses.
‘What the? Since when did I start wearing glasses? Oh well never mind must have been a good night last night. A very good night judging by my head ache.'
He places them back down and tries to get back to sleep but can't so decides to get up. He goes through his daily routine of washing and grooming. When finished he goes down stairs and into the kitchen.
‘What have I got for breakfast, oh great crunchy nut cornflakes my favourite I think not.'
He decides to have a bowl along with two aspirin despite his sarcasm. He sees yesterdays newspaper on the table with the headline, 'Second woman found dead. Victim found raped. Anyone hearing or seeing anything suspicious............................'
'Not another death when is the killing going to stop?'
Mat sits there contemplating, he is clearly affected from what he has read.
Next-door, Mr Griffith is woken by his unsettled wife.
‘What time is?'
‘It's half past seven, sorry dear did I wake you?'
‘Yes you did you know I like a lie in of a morning on my day off.'
‘I know dear I'm sorry it's just I couldn't sleep.'
‘Well you didn't have to wake me up did you?'
‘No I'm sorry dear.'
‘Right well now we're both up how about some breakfast eh.' Mrs Griffith nods and they both go downstairs for their morning porridge. At the table Mr Griffith questions his wife about arriving late last night.
‘By the way where were you last night coming in so late?'
‘I told you I was seeing a friend.'
‘Yes well you don't have to stay out that late do you?'
‘No I suppose not it won't happen again dear.'
‘Your correct it certainly won't.'
After breakfast Mat decides to relax and watch TV all day. He has no partner and few friends and this is what he would do on a typical day off work.
Next-door one of Mr Griffith's friends knocks at the door.
‘George how are you old boy?'
‘I'm fine William how are?'
‘Good very good in fact what brings you here?'
‘I got this mornings paper. It must be difficult for you to cope with what happened?'
‘Oh of course. Yes it is rather sad no one was expecting it. Such a nice chap as well.'
‘Yes I heard how is Mrs Griffith coping?'
‘She's bearing up. She tries to cover it but she is sad, she was quite friendly with him.'
‘It was so out of the blue, it just shows it can happen to anyone.'
‘Yes that it can George that it can.'
Mat is sitting in front of the TV when he hears noises outside. He gets up and takes a look through his front window. There is a large removal van outside.
‘I didn't know someone was moving. Oh well doesn't concern me.'
He goes into the kitchen to get some more aspirin.
‘My head kills hopefully these will shift it.'
Just as he takes them he hears a large bang of the front door.
