Be Careful What You Wish For

By Richard Ridyard

One evening Mrs Griffith goes along to the mental hospital where her daughter Claire is staying.
'Claire darling it's so good to see you, how are you doing?'
'Hello mother I'm bearing up you know. How are you coping?'
'Not too bad Claire I was a bit upset of Mathews sudden death next door.'
'Yes of course and with me in here it can't be easy for you.'
'Well let's just concentrate on getting you out of hear. You did a terrible thing in killing Chris but that's in the past now.'
'But Mum I spoke to a man.'
(Interrupting)'Claire I told you none of this someone told me to do it nonsense that's why your in hear. Do you know that Philip the person who raped and killed those two poor women said that?'
'Yes but.'
'No buts Claire I don't want to hear it.'
Saddened that her Mum doesn't believe her Claire quickly changes the subject.
'I love your new glasses mother.'
'Oh do you they are rather nice aren't they. I had to buy a new pair because I lost my last ones I haven't a clue where though. Your father and I had the house upside down and nothing.'
'Speaking of Dad where is he?'
'Your father is working late again.'
'You don't sound too pleased what's wrong?'
'Oh nothing it's just that it's all he seems to do these days I just wish sometimes he was dead.'
'Mother that's horrible.'
'Yes well I hardly ever see these days anyway.'

They carry on talking for a while and with only ten minutes of visiting time left the nurses start to bring out the patients meals. As Mrs Griffith and Claire continue their conversation they hear raised voices outside in the corridor.
'Mr Williams put the knife down and get back to your room.'
Mr Williams doesn't listen.
'Mr Williams I won't tell you again put the knife down.'

'Do you hear that Claire?'
'Yes what the hell is going on out there?'

A visitor comes down the corridor that shocks Mr Williams he panics and stabs the visitor running off without a moments glance. Shocked, the nurses quickly rush to the visitor's aid. Mrs Griffith emerges to see what's going on. The nurses surround the stabbed victim as they are bleeding heavily. Mrs Griffith goes over to see what has happened for herself.
'Can you please step away madam.' one of the nurses requests. Mrs Griffith doesn't respond and seems to be in a state of shock. The nurse tells her again.
'Madam will you please step away.' Mrs Griffith starts to break down. She pushes the nurses out of the way to get closer to the stabbed victim.
'William!' she sobs.
'William what are you doing here you were supposed to be working late?'
A heavily bleeding William takes his last breaths 'I wanted to surprise you.'
With that said William passes away in the arms of his wife.
