His voice was just an octave above a whisper, but I heard him. I slowly nodded. "Come; let's go get your sunglasses."
He walked me to the east wing, where my bedroom was. By the time we got to the relaxing green and yellow hallway that led to my bedroom door, my eyes had glazed over and had bound me in a sea of fuzzy blindness.
I couldn't identify the blur as Geoffrey, but I knew it was him. It could just as easily been someone else wearing a butler uniform; and I would have thought it was him. He slid my pair of sunglasses onto my face, and within moments I was able to see things normally.
"I called the police a little while ago, they should be here soon." He said as we walked out of my room. "Come with me to wait for them."
He kept me at his side until we were in the living room, and then he only let me sit on the other side of the room. Going into a different room was out of the question. He didn't even need to say it, the unspoken order for me to remain in his sight was written all over his face. It would have been harder to obey, had I not been as tired as I was.
When I was seven, I used to believe that there was a monster in my bedroom. Despite the fact that every time I turned on the light, I didn't see a thing, I was still scared. I lay curled up in my bed, nearly shaking from the unknown threat that never really existed. The night seemed to drag on for an eternity; but when the sun finally rose; it was as if the monster had left my room.
That was how it felt waiting for the police. I knew that the vampires had left the mansion, but I was afraid of being wrong. The sunlight had temporarily taken away the threat; but I never knew of which shadow they could have been hiding behind. So I waited in silent obedience, knowing that the first chance I got; I would leave Geoffrey's side to face the monsters, should there be any.
Geoffrey rose when the door bell chimed through the mansion. My head rose with him, and soon followed my body. I took Klaus out of his baby seat and followed Geoffrey into the foyer to answer the door. Balancing Klaus on my hip with my arm wrapped around his little back, I looked into his beautiful green eyes. The eyes our mother had so kindly given us both. I made a vow right then, I would take care of Klaus as if I were our mother. I wouldn't let any danger come to him.
My attention was grabbed by the traded words between Geoffrey and the police Chief. The detective stood beside him like an obedient child, while the CSI teams in the back unloaded their gear and readied to inspect the crime scene. Geoffrey told them what happened, that three men had broken into the house and murdered my parents.
He showed them to my parents' room, but made sure I didn't wander off. He may as well have put a leash around me. Making me stay with him felt like he, in a way, was taking a dog on a walk. I obeyed, bouncing Klaus on my hip as we were instructed to wait outside. We sat outside my parents' room, Geoffrey taking Klaus out of my arms.
After some minutes of trying to entertain my mind, I decided to try and escape.
