Victor - Chapter 01 - The lawyer by Federico Patané

And so I drank, desperately. I cared not if I was seen and I ignored the codes that made those of my kind blend into the crowd unseen. I must have drunk a lot when I stopped, but the man was still alive and he wasn't going to die for a few hours. I was used to drinking until the victim was almost dead, but this case was different. He was lying on the floor in a dark alley. There were no cars or people around and I rose to my feet and stood silently looking at him. I grinned. I observed what I had just done and I felt a strange pleasure in giving this man pain. All this pain that reflected my frustration, my anger and my hate. But he just refused to die. I enjoyed his sudden sobbing and his pitiful appearance. And then, I came to my sensed and I realized what I had done and was still doing. I saw the horror of my actions and the cruelty of which I did not feel myself capable of. I had to put an end to this madness so I knelt beside him and took his head in my hand gently. I looked into his eyes and saw a man that was begging for help. With a sudden and quick movement I snapped his neck and he died. His muscles relaxed at once and a peaceful expression appeared on his face. His suffering had finished. If you ask me now I could not explain why, but I felt the urge to see my lawyer that very night. I think I needed her to do something for me but what happened afterwards made me forget. I got out of that dark alley quickly. I was not running but I was moving incredibly fast. I stopped at a paid phone that was less than half a block from the alley and dialed her number. A sleepy voice answered at the second ring and when she recognized my voice she straighten up and sounded awake at once. I requested her to meet me and she obediently acceded. There were no questions asked. What I was paying her was far too much to refuse any request that I might have. I even think that she would offer herself to me for that money, but I did not need such a service. I hanged the phone without saying anything else and left at great speed heading to my house. I think I had roamed the street for hours, but when I checked the time had gone really quickly to the door of my house. It must have taken me thirty or forty minutes to get to my house which for the distance was very little time. I found her standing outside my door waiting respectfully. When she saw me she filled with fear and took a step back away from me. At first I did not understood, but then I inspected myself and saw what she had. I was barefoot, all my clothes where torn and I was covered in blood without having any injuries. I took my hand to my mouth and realized that I hadn't even whipped the blood of my lips. It must have been a horrible sight for the poor girl. I stood with my mouth open and something made a change in her. Her fear vanished and she walked back to me. I believe that she might have seen my long and sharp teeth and understood what I was without me having said anything. She opened her mouth to say something but I silenced her. I signaled inside where we could speak without anyone else hearing or disturbing us.
