(Page 3 of 13) Ivaris - Chapter 5 by Jennifer Raney She left us again, not caring to stay for the rest of the questioning.
"If I tell you everything I know, what happens to me?" he asked nervously.
"Well that all depends," answered Rory, "on how much you help us with what you say."
Dolgren nodded, "The only thing I can think of that might help you was a letter I noticed on Jovraan's desk addressed to Varren, from Minister Birenny in Raemon." Sonran Birenny was the Minister of the Arcane Defense Corps of the Enoran Army.
"Did you see the letter? What did it say?"
"No, just the envelope, but Jovraan saw me look at it and he didn't look pleased."
"Alright, that's enough for now," Seroan said, motioning for us to accompany him from the room. The chimeras resumed their posts outside the cell, and Dolgren sighed defeat.
When the trap door was locked and the rug replaced, Seroan said, "I have an idea."
Rory nodded, and we followed him back to the living room. Mordre looked relieved to have us back in the house, and brought us warm rum, tea, and buttered scones.
Eager to have his thoughts shared, Seroan started, "Jovraan knows Dolgren is here looking for us, he'll want to know what has come of him."
"I agree," said Rory.
"Can you get a favor from the Municipal Court, God father?"
"I can."
"What if we doctored a few death certificates?" Seroan suggested, "and then issued a couple new identities?"
Rory smiled, "Ah, I see where you're going with this, if what he said is the truth, and no one else knows he's here, we could cook up a little story for the newspaper. Hardly anyone would notice, with the homicide rate in this city."
"Jovraan will probably be reading all the news that comes out of here," I thought out loud.
We sat for a few moments, each lost in our own thoughts. Then I asked, "Then what? Go back to Raemon and see what this Minister is up to?"
"Well, that too, but I'm more interested to find out what these stones are Jovraan mentioned. Something he stole from Enora, maybe?" Seroan looked at Rory.
"Maybe we should go straight to the Empress. Whatever Jovraan is up to, it can't be something she's happy about, if she even knows anything is going on in the first place," I suggested.
"Maybe, that could be a place to start. But then we'd be revealing our identities all over again... unless she was willing to help us conceal them," Seroan thought out loud. Again we all sat in deep thought.
"Well," Rory said after a few moments, "first thing's first, I'll send a message to the Demographic Commissioner." He got up and went to his office.
I got up with him, "I want to talk to Dolgren again." Seroan nodded and followed me. Rory unlocked the door and let us back down but didn't follow, deciding to wait upstairs for an answer from the Commissioner.
Dolgren had dropped off into a fitful sleep after we left, so I tapped lightly on the bars to wake him.
"What? Oh," he slouched, "you again."
"I have a few more questions," I said.
"Of course you do."
"If we let you go, you'll have to keep hunting us, won't you?"
"Sod off," he snorted.
