He slowly raised it to the wound on his forehead and pressed it down softly. It stung, but Arthur managed to bear it for just long enough to clean out the wound. As he took the cotton ball away, he was disgusted to find that it was soaked red. If only there was a mirror around somewhere...
Using the bandages, Arthur patched up the wound the best he could, wrapping the bandage around his forehead. He probably looked like an idiot, but who was there to judge? Another moment of depression hit him.
Don't worry, be happy.
As the tune started up again Arthur began to wonder about the note. Who'd written it? How did they know what he was thinking? How did junk fall from the sky and kill everyone in town?
Intersection of Chadford Road and High Street. That was roughly three blocks behind him, on the northern side of town. The Anglican church, the town hall, the school and the general store were on the intersection. But what else had the note said? Unwanted attention... what the hell did that mean?
Suddenly a feeling swept over Arthur, as if he was being watched. His head spun around the café, looking for someone (something?), but there was nothing to be seen. The feeling remained however.
Then there was a noise, as though fingernails were slowly tapping on a plane of glass. It was echoing from the storage room at the back of the store.
Not fingernails, Arthur thought, Claws.
No, his imagination was just overacting.
But then the sound rose again, chilling Arthur's spine. Crawling beneath his skin. His mind began to paint violent images of his own death. Grotesque images of what could be making the noise...
He had to leave. To the corner of Chadford Road and High street...
Arthur rose from his seat, experiencing a brief moment of disorientation courtesy of his head wound. At least he had stopped bleeding.
The tapping stopped suddenly.
Arthur headed towards the door quickly, ignoring his knee for the moment. He pushed open the door and gave one solitary glance backwards. He didn't register it at first, and he only realized it as he walked out onto the street.
There were three claws (about a foot long and coloured a grotesque shade of green) gripping the storage room door frame.
Arthur forgot entirely about any injuries as he broke into a run, only slowing down when he was a hundred meters away from the café.

"Let me at it!" The commanding voice yelled.
Melanie, whose eyes had slammed shut due to the pain in her head, heard a rush of footsteps towards the bed.
"I'm going to lift, when it's clear, you guys pull her out!"
"Yeah... yeah... just hurry up man!"
He gripped the sword by its hilt, and began to lift upwards. It started to vibrate in his hands, almost jarring him off of it. Slowly, however, the sword began to lift. How exactly did he, one man, lift it, when two couldn't? There was no time for thought however. The sword relented an inch.
"Pull her!"
A moment after the sword had pulled back from her, Melanie felt herself being dragged from under the bed.
