SUMMARY: Entry for the april flash fiction contest. Theme "the forbidden".

"I don't think we should do this." Mike said anxiously.

"Why do you think that? It's perfectly normal and right." Jane fired back.

"You know..." Mike said showing her the red string around his right wrist. "We took a vow, remember? You and me. This.... This is forbidden"

Jane changed position in her chair. He had hit a soft spot but she was determined not to let go so easily. The table that separated them seemed longer, as if it were driving them apart.

"I can keep it a secret. And so can you." Jane said after a minute. "It can be our secret."

"No." He replied.

Mike looked away, his sight lost in the other tables of the coffee shop. He didn't have the strength to confront her. He hated her for even proposing it.

"You mustn't deny you desire." She said. "I have the same longing as you."

Jane placed her hand on his and Mike lifted his head again to meet her gaze.

"You know what I am talking about." Jane continued showing renew enthusiasm. "I bet you can already feel it. The moist in your mouth, the overwhelming feeling of it. Sweet, strong, powerful. Don't deny it. You know you have felt it before. I can see it in your eyes that you remember."

She paused for a moment. He was now staring blindly forward, transfixed. Jane could feel that the palm of his hand was now wet with sweat. This was no longer a struggle, it was a war of wills of unprecedented proportions.

"Why are you doing this?" He said suddenly.

"Because I need it." She said with a sensual voice. "And you need it too."

She began slowly to caress his hand and his arm. She was seducing him.

"Yes.... Yes..." Mike stammered. "But we can't. We must be strong and avoid it. You are not even trying."

Jane changed the expression of her face. Her lips barely described a smile, her eyes were wide open and her head slightly tilted forward. She was pleading.

Something in his chest felt really bad. Mike was already feeling guilty. He loved her and wanted to do anything for her. He felt contradicted. He knew this could not end well either way.

Mike gathered all his strength, made a fist with his left hand and hit the table. Jane was startled and so was the people in the adjacent tables. Even the waitress a few meters away turned her head.

She changed. Her eyes no longer welcoming but angry. Her eyebrows closer together, her smile gone and her cheeks redder.

"If you are not going to do it, then why are you still here?" she said angrily.

"I don't think you should do it either. So I am staying to try and help you fight your urge." He replied with noticeable effort.

"Then you shall see me do it." She said.

A malevolent grin drew on her face. She took her hands from his and sat straight. Her defiance was definite. He extended his arm looking for her hand that was out of reach.

"Please." He begged one last time. "We can fight this urge. Together. Come with me and let's go! Away from temptation."

"No." she said. Her voice as cold as ice. "This is not living. I cannot go on like this. My life is a constant suffering. You know it. You are feeling it too."

"I am sorry." He said avoiding her eyes.

Mike got up from the table and left without even looking back. Jane smiled. In a way she had won. Then she called the waitress with her hand.

"I want a large coffee with milk and a huge piece of that Rogel that you have over the counter." She ordered calmly.

When the waitress left to get her order she smiled again to herself.

"Forbidden my ass." She thought to herself. "That is not a diet. It pure and plain torture. No one will keep me away from this piece of cake! Not even that stupid vow!"
