Legends I - The Creation of Ayamar, part II by Catrine Sandal

He - as the only one not having a specific element that excluded anything else, but included everything - saw further than the other gods. And he saw one specific thing that most of all filled him with wonder and awe. The most magical of all non-human creatures of all times, the creature that would later be his symbol, and also the creature the Father most of all wished never was created. The dragon.

They were all stunned by what they had seen. All of them wanted deeply to learn more about their new world, but none more so than Varou. He longed - no, ached - to set his feet on that rich, fertile soil and to walk around, talking to the birds, the bees, the creatures on the ground, in the water and in the air. Still, he waited to hear what Tai-Danar had to say.

Tai-Danar walked for a long time, telling them all they needed to know as their work now started. How he had wanted it to be, and how they should rule, or rather guide. He spread his arms.
"And yet - there is one more thing I have not yet created, perhaps the most important of all. A creature that soon will start to walk the lands here."
"What is it?" Amtil asked, as usual the most impatient.
"I will create the first human beings. I will create the elves."

This, however, did not happen at once, and it did not happen in the open as this had done. In addition, other creatures - some more human-like than others - were created, all of them without the gods' knowledge. Nobody, except Tai-Danar, knew when and how they came. Some were truly magical.

The gods were delighted as they discovered the new races and creatures, and though they were doubtful about the vicious and deadly creatures, they understood that there was a purpose behind it - the very purpose for which they themselves were created. Especially Varou took great delight in it, getting to know all these creatures, even the vicious ones, with the result that he was the only one able to communicate with them. He rode dragons and visited the Rittru underground. Unlike the other gods, he was not so eager to see the elves. He certainly saw them, but he visited them rarely. He could see their potential for a big fall in them, and though some of those sides were their good ones, he grew worried. But some of them were still to his heart and would follow him on his adventures.

He used to walk the earth with Tai-Danar. They shared the deep interest for all things magic, for the animals and for the nature. They loved the wild. Though Tai-Danar had seen the other gods' need and want for domesticated areas, it was in the wilderness he was forever most at home, and Varou perhaps even more so. Varou loved the magical forests that almost were alive in themselves; loved to walk in the deep fog and mist. Also, he was the first one ever to see the unicorns.
