Chapter 9

From the massive alien colony ship, a burst of light flew through space. Its target was the Leker vessel and its bridge. As the red beam moved through space, it carried with it the hopes of a future, a future of peace. It hit the front of the Leker vessel without making any damage or even leaving a visible trace. This was not a beam or weapon of war, but a communication laser. The unknown ships were trying to contact the Lekers and give them a choice, the only question was if there were listening.

On the bridge of the Leker ship, a single light began to glow on the console. It was the sole sign of the red beam burst the unknown aliens had hit the vessel with. It was a small light, and went unnoticed for a few seconds. Communications was not something with which the Lekers were familiar with. They adhered to the philosophy of shoot first and take prisoners later, assuming they didn't eat them first. Yet eventually one of the Leker technicians noticed and stared. Its ruby red eyes took in the glow of the flashing button, as it contemplated whether or not to press. Given the unusualness of the situation, the enemy fleet being bigger than their own, the Leker took some inceptive and pressed it.

The front of the bridge was suddenly filled with a huge image of a hologram. It completely covered all other screens and devices, for it was decided long ago that any communication of the Lekers would be important, and thus must take all attention on the bridge. The picture was just two dimensional, but thanks to oscillating light and good programming, the image was crystal clear. After a moment, a definite object began to appear in it. The crew on the bridge all stopped to look at the hologram, and the creature that would soon be speaking with it.

The image slowly began to clear itself, as the Leker computer assimilated the millions of bytes of codes on the red communication laser. Then, as the bits and pieces came together, a face appeared. Well...You could call it a face, although only a biologist would say so. Ohh there was a mouth, and eyes, many eyes but the image in front of the Lekers was by no means anywhere close to what they thought a face should look like. The universe is full of strange and unusual beings, yet what the Lekers saw in front of them startled even the most veteran of warriors.

The first thing the Lekers noticed about the beast was its eyes, all twenty thousand of them. It was not completely covered in them, but all of the eyes were grouped together as different specialized view of a single image. The only way a human could even begin to imagine how these creatures saw, was to be looking at a wall of televisions, each of them at a different angle. Its large and red compound eyes seemed to take in everything on the Leker Bridge, and to miss no detail. After the shock of its eyes had worn off, the Lekers began to observe the other unique characteristics of the alien.

Its entire face, shoulders, and body was covered by a smooth and dark skin. Well it at least appeared as skin to the Lekers, but when they looked a bit harder they saw it was too think to be skin.
