Being a conscientious reader, when a friend of mine had to get a fantasy book as a present for a friend of hers, I recommended Heroes Die. I figured he's male, into fantasy, and probably would like something different. When presented with the book however, he was vastly amused at the cheesy front cover. I know there are several, and I have mentioned this one before, but Matt, Mr Stover, can you get anything done about this? Blade of Tyshalle looks great (as Shehzad's avatar attests) but Heroes Die...Big Bloke, Manly Pose. It just looks silly....Any thoughts or explanations?

And Caine is half Indian! To quote Matt, the guy on the HD cover is white-bread as it comes LOL.

From Stover's blog, it's likely they are going to re-release HD when Caine Black Knife is released, and Matt is going to make sure there is a new cover.

Gotta agree with that, Matt. I was reading it at the gym yesterday and I was getting some pretty strange looks. It looks a little like a gay porn novel.

I thought this was going to be the first time, Juzz. Man was I disappointed when I found out what Heroe's Die was really about.

Disappointed in Heroes Die, or that it wasn't porn?

That it wasn't porn! From the cover, one would assume....LOL

No, I am not disappointed in the book at all. So far it's very interesting. Very cinematic. It has the feel of a movie, but in a good way, unlike Perdido Street, which for me was disjointed and hard to envision.

I agree, Gary. I think Heroes Die would translate very well to the big screen.

Coming soon to a theater near you....Heroes Die starring ???

    Imagine....

Although I already own a copy of this book, I would definitely buy a reissue if the cover is changed. Like most others, I do not picture Caine/Hari Michaelson looking like the dude on the current cover.

Matt, chime in here! Did you see this cover before the book was released? Who is your agent? Didn't he/she get you cover approval?

It would make a great movie. Certainly way better than what Hollywood is pushing on us now as creative SFF. Did anyone see The Jacket?

I've gotta say, I kind of like the cover, at least in MMPB. Caine, to me, looks like he's saying,
"OK, who wants to poke the bear? I've got these knives, what have you got shitheel?"

I like the marble-looking background, too.

I agree he looks like he's saying 'who wants to poke the bear' but 'poke' as in the British use of the word!!!

To be fair, it didn't put me off the book, just be glad you didn't get a Barnes & Noble stand with that picture on it!!!

Fitz, are we talking about the same cover?

It's odd too, because the book is well written, very gritty and tough, just the opposite of what you might expect after looking at the cover. Whoever designed it likely didn't read the book.

Fair enough Fitz though it is pretty close! The Manly Pose in Heroes Die is just short of that other book cover, both deeply cheesy anyway..Heroes Die needs a cover like Blade of Tyshalle. I wonder if the artist responsible is likely to take a peek on this site? If so, I wonder if as Gary says, they hadn't read the book when they drew it? They can't have as they got his race wrong and the general feel of the book too haven't they?!

That second cover is hilarious! Is that a German cover or something?

That's the Russian cover. And it's not nearly as silly as the French cover, which my vanity forbids me to post . . .

Doug Beekman, a very fine artist, did the original HD cover. No, I do not have cover approval (Del Rey does not grant this even to authors MUCH more successful than I); however, I did see a number of Doug's preliminary sketches and treatments for the cover, and I can attest that the white-bread thing is not wholly his fault. His original concept was exactly the way Hari is described in the novel . . . but I think the Powers That Be found the image too scruffy and sinister-looking. In those days, the Powers That Be had no idea what I was about . . . and none of them had actually read the novel, which Doug had. Every word.

Doug actually wanted to use Ma'elKoth's Great Work as the backdrop -- which I think would have been dynamite -- but the art dept. just wouldn't go for it.

    Such is life.

I agree, however, that the mm looks considerably less silly; I'm hoping that the eventual re-issue will look even better.

Ah man, Ma'elkoth's clay would have been an awesome cover.

Any chance of using that for the re-release?

So we can conclude that the Powers that Be can be idiots, particularly when selling to a foreign market? Whatever happened to market research and focus groups and taste?

Sorry Matt, that was a bit harsh...I am just a bit surprised that such a good idea was sidelined for cheese! I guess that I like understated covers - I think there was a thread where we discussed the fact that different nations have different covers due to taste..
