I was just organizing my audiobook rack in our computer room and realized I sure have a lot of Harry Potter stuff!.. which got me to thinking just how much have I spent over the years on HP merchandise.

    an estimated breakdown...

    1. All Seven Audiobooks - $160
    2. Leatherbound Book#2 - $70
    3. Special Edition Book#4 - $50
    4. Special Edition Book#7 - $50
    5. DVD Movies/Rentals - $100
    6. Keychain - $5

    total - $435

    Can anyone beat that? :)

    I can beat it:

I have all 7 books in US editions, books 1-3 in UK editions. I can't remember exactly, but I was given at least three of them, probably more like 5 of them. Out of the ones I bought, I spent no more than $10 a piece. I have neither seen at the theater, rented, or bought any of the movies. I do not own a key chain. So I've spent something less than $70, probably less than $50 on Harry Potter.

I joined the series as a young'un after watching a bit about the books on Blue Peter around 1999. All I've ever bought is the books. So, I've spent what? 50 quid?

    Let's see...

I listened to the first book on audio but I got it for free when I worked at a used book store about ten years ago. I've seen two or three of the movies and watched them via a Netflix or Blockbuster account. And that's about it. So we're talking...

$0. Maybe $1-2 if you consider the "slot" for the movie rentals.

I've thought about the same question, but regarding The Lord of the Rings.

I have several versions of ALL Tolkien's books, several versions of the DVDs, books on the artwork, a large collection of the action figures, various other miniatures and merchandise, and have seen the films multiple times in the theatres.

    I'm sure it's well over $1,000.

I've spent a decent amount on Harry Potter as well (the DVDs and books), but nowhere close to LOTR.

Yeah, in a close second place would be Hobbit/LotR...
Special edition leatherbound books - $150
    BBC Audio productions - $100
    Sword - $160

Next would be Alice in Wonderland, Sherlock Holmes, War of the Worlds...

I'm not sure... Maybe $12 or $14 renting two of the movies; I forget which ones, perhaps the first and fourth.

That's it for me. I don't think my wife has ever read any of the books either.

Not a contender for that title

I checked volumes 1-4 out of the library.

The only money I spent on it was movie tickets for eps 1-4 and 6.

    Hooray for public libraries.

Yup. I did a quick calculation in my head, and I'm sure my LOTR spending is more than $1,200.

Reading this post made me think, "Wow! That's a lot of money to spend on series. I sure wouldn't go that far with my fandom."

Of course, then I realized I would gladly allow Brandon Sanderson to impregnate my girlfriend for writing the Mistborn trilogy. So carry on.

LOL, golden. I'd probbaly make the same offer to Richard Morgan so i cant say much.

I've spent a total of about 8 dollars on the potter books. I got the lot of them at a garage sale last month for 15, but I sold 2 DVD's for 7 dollars.

LOTR is easily the most I've spent on a series. Special addition dvd's and bluerays, at least 4 or 5 video games, graphic novels, the old animated film etc etc etc. Probably near 700 or 800 dollars.

I haven't spent too much on Harry.

I got loaned 6 of the 7 books, only buying the seventh. I got that, a UK first edition, at Goodwill for $2.

I've seen all the movies, but only a few in theaters, so maybe another $30 dollars there.

So less than $40 all together.
