    Welcome!

This thread is dedicated to you. Yes, you, intrepid writer.

Are you harried, lost, confused, with no direction?

Then you've come to the right place! Come on in! Set your bones down for a while, listen to some music, and take a deep breath. All together now... aaahhhh.

Feeling better now? A little more relaxed? Maybe you think you might just go for one of those donuts?

For shame!! This is the SET GOALS AND REACH 'EM thread!

Let us know what you would like to accomplish this lovely third month of 2011, and we'll help you keep track of your progress.

No, we won't visit you at home: cook dinner, put the kids to bed, do the laundry, clean the dishes, walk the dog, finish up that awful report for work, or cut the lawn. If we would do that, we'd be crazy.

But we are mad. Mad enough to dedicate a few moments of our own precious time to help each other reach our goals.

    WE CAN DO IT! :D

tmso, I do believe that you're late for tea! And, um, where are the donuts? I mean, you did make sure to pick up the cream filled ones. Or (gasp) the raspberry???

Thanks for keeping track this month, tmso! Much appreciated!

Ok, so my goals this month are:
    6,500 words for Book 2
6,500 words on the rewrite of Book 1

I can probably best this but, for right now, this is what I want to aim for. May revise later.

Hot jam donuts fresh from the oil with sugar coating... yum.

    and for this month...

    1. participate in flash fiction this month
    2. finish my final edit of book 2, give it to others for feedback.
    3. start editing (at least read) book 3 that's been sitting there untouched for more than 12 months...

    Thanks for the thread tmso.

Finish the basic structure of a novel I am working on as in write descriptions or paragraphs for many chapters and set it up in sequence...let's say 10,000 words alltogether. I have a few chapters down, but not edited, and I would like to get some of that done, too.

I like this idea. Here are my goals.

    1. Participate in the Flash Fiction again
    2. Begin research on my first novel (a spinoff of my main story, i.e. practice)
    3. Begin writing my first novel - 15,000 words maybe?
    4. Continue research on my main story

Lofty maybe, but I really have no idea. We'll see what happens.

I would like to finish my current WIP this month--which computes to roughly 70,000 words. Sitting at about 50k right now.

That's 2258 words a day. Seems like a lot of words. Not much of a goal if it doesn't take some effort to accomplish, though, is it? :)

I´m not going to set any word goals. However, I will set chapter goals.

    1. Participate in FF of March
    2. Write 4 chapters on my WIP.

Easy enough to type down on a forum post, hard in real life since I have a huge report to hand in by the end of March and marketing material for the band to complete. I hope I can keep it up though.

    3. Write and edit one other story with the goal of submitting it for publication consideration.
    4. Write my 750 words on at least 80% of the days in March.

That is a lot of words. I can write at that speed if I can do it full time - ie not be at work, and spend 7-8 hours a day writing - and I write quickly. Good luck with it!

I really need to set a goal this month as I've done &%#$ all so far this year, which just isn't good enough. I'm not going to commit to doing the Flash, as it really depends what the topic/theme is - sometimes they grab me and sometimes they don't. So I'll do it if I like the topic/theme.

I'm in rewrite mode with the WIP at the moment so I'm not setting a word-writing goal either.

Tell you what, put me down for 4 chapters worth of rewrite, I think I ought to be able to manage that in March.

One of these times I hope to use the month to write/mostly write something new.

    Not this month however.

    Goals:
*Finish the latest editing pass on my WIP/ about 8 more chapters, unless I add another chapter. I need about 7000 more words.
*Submit a novel to the Angry Robot "Cattle call" (my words not theirs) basically; read the guidelines, follow the guidelines, send it. It sounds easy, but I can find fifty ways to not do it.

I think I'll leave it at that and call it a lofty goal.

    Thanks :)

I think for a normal person it would be a herculean undertaking, but for me...well, I don't have a lot else going on... :p

Being unemployed and completely antisocial has a few perks, anyway.

Yeah, if you don't have to fit it in around work it should be doable I would have thought. What sort of thing is your WIP?

I'll go five grand this month. That seems to be what I have been averaging so I'd like to actually make my goal for once. Let's set that bar nice and low. :D

Epic fantasy, of course. There's an excerpt of it somewhere a few pages back, posted for critique...it's a lot of fun to write :)

3k done today, so a good start to the month. And the day, she is far from done.

Well, seeing how I somehow managed to complete my goals last month, now I'm really going for broke:

    1) Participate to March Flash Fiction Contest
    2) Participate to Feb/March Short Story Contest
    3) Full edit of the last three chapters + epilogue of my novel (that's about 35k words)
    4) Final Edit of the first 5 chapters + prologue of my novel
    5) Bring peace to the middle-east.

Wish me luck, and great job all in February.

I have a few other items on the agenda (write a book review, edit a 50-page story that I haven't looked at in months, and maybe start and complete a 10-page story idea I came up with a few days ago), but I am going to try to focus mainly on my novel and add another 40 pages (10,000 words) this month.

I want to see if I can get a rough idea of my book finished. Certainly not the finished product, but I need to see how it's all going to end (I'm one of those "characters tell me story" writers ;))

My plan is to write a complete and detailed treatment and a chapter by chapter and scene by scene outline for a novel length idea that has been kicking around my head for almost two years now.

I have never done anything but the barest sketch of an outline before, preferring to freestyle it. That process has never worked for me in the past. I usually get muddled down in the middle and never finish. So I thought I'd mix it up a bit. Maybe outlining will bring me better luck.
