that's it's about 2 Australian dollars to a pound. That about right.

At the moment I'm buying lots of books through Amazon from the US because you can't get them here and the exchange rate from pounds stirling to US dollars works in my favour. I can be paying £3 for a paperback - erm, $6Au or $5US. When the postage is free that's even better!

Amazon (and a number of other similar sites) are very good for getting books, I find. Not only is the postage often discounted when you buy in bulk, but they do package them well (unlike some sites). The biggest bane of my life is when books arrive damaged in the post.

Anyway - just a reminder - keep it nice, and keep the chat to the chattery thread.

Let me throw this one in as an attempt to get things back on track, cos I want things tidy when Alison gets back :D - how important is the book cover in helping you decide which book to buy? Can a cover make you buy something or put you off? Has it done that with Alison's book/s? (I like the UK cover of The Gift, myself. ;) )

Gimme some examples!

YAY! I remebered an exchange rate :D

I know i shouldn't "judge a book by it's cover" but i just can't help myself :D. Also, the cover of the Gift did make me pick it up, it looked mysterious or something, i can't really remember (it was 2 years ago).

I also never go anywhere near books with those water colour cliched sort of images :D. You know the muscle man, with his shirt bursting open holding up a sword and staring determinedly into the distance with the busty wench dressed in a compeleltly inappropriate dress cliging to him.
I
suppose you can sometimes judge the quality of a book by the cover, though, i've read some books that i've absolutely loved and then saw a different edition with a horrible cover that i never would have touched with a fifty foot pole .

Thinking about it now, i think the name of a book has more of an effect on me than the cover, if i find the name interesting i'll probably disregard the cover, even if it's horrendous :D

Oh and gemini I blocked you I'll decide when I want to talk to you again maybe you shouldn't be so rude. You blocked me? Meh, your loss.

This is not what ur supossed to do. But I confess I judge a lot of books by the cover it has to be intresting. Otherwise I look at it and dismiss it..My loss.
But I was just reading gems post and she's right about the name it probley does have more affect on me than the cover meh I dont know :D

Oh and gemini believe me its not my loss

I have to admit I borrowed a book from the library because the cover looked cool, it was horrible! The plot was boring everything about it was boring, I didn't even bother to finish which is something I hardly do. So the lesson learnt was don't judge a book by its cover

I have to admit that I picked up my copy of the Naming because of the cover. Mostly because the jacket is a most satisfying shade of green. After I read it and saw the other covers though, I really felt like the others were better. I work in a bookstore and I can never get over how the covers are different from 1 countyr to the next. HP is a good example. The US covers are really "cute" and like the Naming cram as many characters as posssible on the covers.

I like to see the main characters in my own mind first, instead of the artists rendition of them. The UK and AU versions leave much more to the imagination.

most of the books i pick are because of the covers and usally they are good, i havent yet learnt the lesson about not juding a book by its cover yet!

When does The Crow come out in the UK? It comes out mid-2006 in Australia, doesn't it? I want the UK cover to make my UK collection look neat and tidy, hehe. :p

(Sorry if this isn't the right thread but I think it's the most relevant since I'm now buying by book covers...)
