Has anyone by any chance read his Dark Border trilogy about the splendid swordsman Istvan Di Vega?

Or his collaboration with his sister Marion (of Avalon fame) , called Hunters of the Red Moon?

I have! Wow.. you dont see to many people bring this author up. I've read the first book of the Dark Borders series, and a prequel to that series called "A Gathering of Heroes".

As to my opinion? Gathering of Heroes was a great book, it showed the interplay between heroes of the land, from different cultures, and how each hero isnt quite as perfect as legend makes out to be. Plus, because their all hero's of their perspective cultures, the interplay between all the heroes is rather interesting. They don't necessary get along. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

As to the Dark Border series, I loved the first book. One of the best sword fights in a book that I have ever seen( Zimmer himself was a swordsmen in practise). Plus, alot of politics in it, espically between the armies (Kings, etc) and the Guilds. I have the second book, King Chondo's Ride, but never read it.

Why? Well, the series was never completed. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/frown.gif
Paul Zimmer passed away before the series was done. So, I am always hesitant bout reading it cause it'll leave me hanging. But, looking at it, I think I will read it.. Supposely, in one of the magazines his sister published, their is a poem that gives you 'suggestions' on how the series did end... But, I've never seen this poem..

Zimmer also has a few individual novels published, Ingulf the Mad is one of them. I've never read it... Have it though. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Here is a book desc of Hunters of the Red Moon...
"The hunters would kidnap intelligent beings from other planets and use them as prey. If their prey could survive the next red moon, then freedom would be theirs. But only one catch, they didn't know what the hunters looked like."

I found dozens of copies listed on abe.com at pretty reasonable prices.

Yes, Hunters of the Red Moon sounded very interesting as well, reminds me of Michelle West's Hunters duology.

But about the Dark Border series, I was under the impression that Gatherer of clouds was the third volume. Is this incorrect? If so, do you know what the name of third volume is? I understand the series was planned to be much longer, five in total.

Gather of Clouds is a book written by Sean Russell..

A Gathering of Hero's is what I think you meant to type. I am not sure, I was always under the impression that book was a stand-alone. At the top of the cover, it simply states 'A Dark Border Novel' while the other two have it as Dark Border Novel Volume 1 and Volume 2.

Though, I wonder.. Looking at scifan, it was published almost 5 years after King Chondos Ride.. Maybe Gather of Heros was the third volume.. Dam.. I am not sure, I am going to cruise the 'Net' to see if I can find any info wether it's a stand-alone or not..

I'll check out the link. I think you were right btw, in that Gathering of heroes is separate novel set in the same world.

The books were recommended to me by someone who enjoyed Gemmell and Erikson. I got the impression they were superb.

Defintely a cut above the standard fare.. It has been a long time since I read the first book, but, I did think it was excellent..

I read "Hunters of the Red Moon" a long time ago.
At the time I really enjoyed it although I'm not very much into science fiction http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

I read 'Hunters of the Red Moon' a long time ago, and I remember it as one of those books where you just can't explain why you like it so much. The end is odd and doesn't really make sense if you think about it too much, it's fairly predictable...But damned if I didn't read it 6 or 7 times.
