There probably is a bias towards brunettes - :p Dernhil has dark brown hair. Malgorn is fair haired.... I can't remember anyone else!
Mr Wenham could of course dye his hair brown, if we asked him nicely...
And yes, Maerad really did like Dernhil.

That reminds me I've always wondered about the Winterking (It may seem off topic but I was thinking about Maerad's love life)... does anyone like him? I do but I find him really confusing and I end up reading the bits with him over and over to try and understand him

As I remember - both Maerad and Cadvan have dark hair (I'm pretty certain Maerad has black hair). I'm not sure that I specify beyond that ? Dernhil has brown hair and brown eyes. I can imagine his face for myself; gentle and intelligent.
Yes, Silvia, Maerad does have a hard time with her love life; but that's part of growing up too, I think! Or maybe it was just me.
As for the Winterking - well! Maybe anything said in detail can be in spoiler tags, not to spoil things for Silvia. But I think he's pretty cool, and he is confusing.
He's not human, after all. But I think he has a few fair points in those conversations with Maerad; he's not lying to her, and even though she finds what he says confusing, he doesn't even mean to confuse her. He's amoral, though, in Maerad's terms, as in fact all the Elidhu are - even Ardina - they don't think in the same ways as human beings, and don't find the same things important.
