This thread seems a little dusty, but I've been dying to ask... what is Maerad's lyre supposed to look like? On the covers it looks like a harp, although I've always seen it as a kind of small, round guitar, like those ones that medieval minstrels use, or the one on the front of Dianna Wynne-Jones' 'Cart and Cwidder' can anyone help me out? I'm not sure if I've missed this on another thread... ali? This is driving me nuts!

Emerald :) :) :)

I sort of imagined it almost the same as it is on the UK edition..........

Okies, when i typed "Lyre" into google, here's what came up http://www.csdm.qc.ca/stejarc/dictionnaire/imagesdicolm/lyre.jpg hmm, so it seems i was wrong :( , but it'll always be the guitar like thin gin my own head.....

When you look at the Lyre, you can see an element of a guitar, or is it just me?

The lyre on the cover of The Riddle is closest to my own imagining, but that's because I had a long discussion with Patrick, the book deisgenr, about what it was. When he first asked, I realised I really didn't know - all I really knew was its size, that it was made of wood and had runes carved on it. So we came up with something that wasn't too much like a Greek lyre, but a kind of cross between a Saxon and Greek lyre. But of course you are all free to imagine whatever you like - that's what the books are for!
