The Cadvan story is up there - but it will be a while before there are any more, I'm afraid, because I have to concentrate on The Crow! But Peter - who we know is deeply interested in relationship, because he's a fan of the books :p - asked:

how many times do you have to re-write a book before it is published Alison?

It really depends. I rewrote The Gift five times, and The Riddle at least twice (not counting all the times I just read through it and fixed things up). It took me ages to get the beginning of The Gift right, there must have been about five versions... and I had to completely rewrite the final quarter. On the other hand, I must have learnt something, because with The Riddle, I just had to add the first chapter after the first draft (originally it began at chapter 2). The rest is just lots of fiddling, trying to get it as right as possible. The extracts up on the web page are all unedited, and I think Gemini (?) noticed a few differences. There are also differences between the Australian and UK editions. It's just all polishing, polishing, polishing...

For The Crow, I have to write another chapter at the end and weave a storyline through the last quarter. There's a bit of the story that hasn't been totally written yet, because writing the story of what happens to Hem was so intense that I ended up concentrating entirely on one aspect of it. (I often write in layers, and add in other layers later). So there's a bit of work to do before I get down to the fiddling. But I don't think there will be a lot of difference in the first four chapters; they will stay pretty much as they are.

And yes, I write in Word, straight on to the computer. I couldn't imagine writing it out by hand first!

I've got another couple of books that I have ideas for at the moment (not set in Annar, but both different kinds of fantasy), and I want to write them too...
Oooo more fantasy, interesting. more fantasy !!?!?!!?!? ohh any clues as to what they r about??? I'm seconding that.

Lol, we always come back to the relationships :D, someone always asks "So, anyone else here think Cadvan and Maerad should get it on?"... it's unavoidable it seems .

5 times is pretty amazing, i always get sick of reading a stroy written by myself after reading it more than twice.

Ah ha! Well, they're just ideas...but writers love talking about books, rather than writing them... :p look at me!

One, called The Stone Heart, is a stand alone for slightly younger readers. It will probably be around 150 pages long and it has VERY short chapters. I've written a few of them already, and it's quite lively, so I really want to finish it. It's set in a big city which is a bit like Revolutionary Paris, where magic is banned, and it's about an urchin boy called Pipistrel, who's a thief, and his ill sister Eleanor, who live in the Choke Alleys, the poor quarters. One day Pip steals a box with a mysterious object inside, and finds himself pursued by some of the most powerful and evil people in the kingdom. There's a very smart princess, (Georgette) who I really like, a bad king, a dead Queen, a really evil Cardinal, various low-life characters, assassins, witches, a lugubrious poet, a theatre company and lots of wickedness. And so far it's also quite funny.

The other is another stand alone, an adult fantasy, and will be a tragic and cruel love story. That's just a feeling at the moment, meaning I can sort of feel what it might be like, but haven't written any of it.
