Hey, just found this super forum and have decided to post something. Do any of you readers out there notice parts of Pellinor series from other books? When I first read "The Gift" it was right after I finished LOTR. I was really surprised to find so much stuff from LOTR in "The Gift". For example, I think one of the kings of old in Annar has the same name as a mystical tree in LOTR (Laurelin, I think), and Lady Ardina and her secret enchanted forest dwelling-place is kind of like Lothlorien and Galadriel in LOTR.
Did anyone else notice these things or am I just obsessed?

no ur not obsessed i think this is because LOTR is one of alisons favs and inspired her to right fantasy but i like the LOTR stuff so its all good...

WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!!!

I have just finished reading the Riddle and I absolutely agree that Cadavan and Maerad HAVE to get together!!!! But what was all that thing about the Winterking, I personally don't see what Maerad saw in him when she had been around Cadavan for all that time! :p

Hi Lola - welcome! Yes, you're quite right - there are a lot of nods to Tolkien in The Gift - also, Ursula le Guin, though only a few people pick up on that one (I was slightly miffed to be called "derivative" because of the Tolkien tributes, though! I think the book is also very different...I wanted to take some of the things he did and put my own spin on them.) There are allusions that have been put in quite deliberately; I often do that sort of thing in my writing. It's no more than the kind of thing Tolkien did with Middle English poetry or the Edda in TLOTR, or, in fact, what most writers do: literature always emerges from other literature. But I move on from paying my literary dues in The Riddle and The Crow. Yes, absolutely, there is an echo of Lothlorien in Rachida; the idea of a forest city caught in a kind of time warp is rather enchanting.

But Laurelin is (ahem) not a conscious one. Sharp reading, to pick that up...on a side issue, I was peeved when I read His Dark Materials and saw that Pulman had stolen my name "Thorold", which I actually made up when I was 10. :D

Maybe it was the whole "Tall, dark, handsome, mysterious" thing that attracted Maerad to Arkan... but that decribes Cadvan too...hmm maybe she saw Cadvan in Arkan  ... well that doesn't make much sense but it's just an idea

Btw Welcome Leonie

Thank you i'm glad to be here! That thing with Arkan was just strange though. Do you think he will return in future books and mess up Maerad's mind a bit more? I hope not he does seem a bit tempermental.

I have a feeling he's going to come back somewhere in the last book and possibly try to kidnap Maerad again... then Cadvan could be her knight in shining armor! Or he could just send some more things after them again or maybe Arkan could help them beat Sharma and then Cadvan could get really jelous and confess his love for Maerad.... Ahhh the possibilities :p
