Relationships in the book

I have a question about Ardina (I love that name) and Arkan. At the end of the Riddle there is a song/poem about them in the Apprendices. And it seemed to imply from where I was sitting anyway that there was/is something going on between them. Am I right in thinking that or completely taking the wrong end of the stick??

*bemoans not having the book*

I don't know about the book, but in the sample chapters, the Lay is of Ardina and Ardhor, during the time of the Winterking Arkan.

Yes, they would probably be puzzled by any labels. Ambiguous in every way... though Ardina seems intensely female.

I love the ambiguity of the Elidhu. When I read The Gift, I saw them as more Elvish (ala Tolkien), but after reading The Riddle they seem more to the God/Deity side of things. With some of the Greek Gods' fascination with humans thrown in as spice.

Cheers to Alison for hinting at a non-hetero relationship as well! Fantasy writing can get so plugged up with it's archetypes that it dies. Thanks to authors like Alison, classic forms can incorporate a broader reality (and resonate with more people) and still be classical.

I'm also fascinated by the elemental magic of the Elidhu "versus" the more systematic magic of the Bards, but that's for another thread.

Relationships are great in The Gift and The Riddle. They seem well balanced, with moments of affection and anger. Very real. And it's nice how they grow, sometimes the quick infatuation (Maerad and Arkan) and other times a deeper, slower burn. Nice pacing and variety.

The quick infactuation that is very strong but burns out very quickly and the more deeper, slower burn that can last a life time, like what is happening between Cadvan and Maerad!!!! :)
