It also gives the main character something to mope about...so that every1 will like him/her. It gives them the sympathy...then they appear to regain their strength...although that may have been what they would have been like if their parent's hadn't buggered off/died. (i don't mean that in a nasty way...sorry if it came over like that..u can't really put feeling or tone into these.. :rolleyes: )
