I don't know what to think about Maerad becoming evil. There's the part where she kills the Bard, Ilar, and 'utterly wanted to destroy the Bard, and later where Cadvan senses the darkness growing within her, but do her experiences after losing Cadvan in the pass, and later Dharin change her, so when she returns to Pellinor and finds Cadvan there, alive, the darkness is gone or has been driven back?
Sorry about all the spoilers, but don't want to ruin anything for Eled Idhil na, (she hasn't read the Riddle)

*Off-topic, but referring back to When Maerad is escaping from Arkan's palace, she sees through the illusion of the beautiful palace. well what if the way she saw Arkan was an illusion. could he in fact be a really ugly and deformed guy and what she saw was only an illusion which when she is in her full power she will be able to see through. Because in the book she does know that he has done something to her with magic, what if it was to make her see him as handsome, etc so that she would 'fall in love with him'?and it it specifically says that suddenly she sees the real him, the creepy dark side when he's angry or something, i cant remember exactly but that does happendoesn't Maerad fall in love with Arkan after she sees the dark side of him, not before (I could be wrong, please correct me if I am)*

Well, in reference to the Leonie post you quoted,

I think that Arkan, being an elemental can make himself look like whatever he wants to. He probably doesn't know himself what he looks like.

Oh, I don't think the darkness was gone from Maerad after the events in "The Riddle", I actualy think it made it grow stronger.

I think that being by herself and having to go through finding her cousin and losing him, getting through the "Arkan incident" and having to be a wolf has made her more reserved. She probably now wants to do things herself without resorting to help and is also probably trying to carry all burdans by herself

I think that makes her more dark, if anything.

thinking of all the changes the Gilmans Cot slave has gone through,

I meant to put a question mark in my original post at the end of all the spoilers. Anyway, I don't know, I didn't deliberately express an opinion, just the thoughts in my head at that particular time.

Back to the Arkan thing, didn't Arkan's mask ACCIDENTALLY slip? I don't think he meant her to see his darker side, because when he looked back at her, he looked as he had done before.

I am currently reading the Gift (again) and in rachida Ardina says to Maerad that 'Only this is clear: you have a great heart, but will only find it to be so through great pain.' Maeard may need her love to overcome a possible desire for power. I don't know about this just guessing really ;)
I think that the great pain= when she thought Cadvan was dead and was dying herselfand the great heart= loving Arkan?

so maybe she's reformed already :D

i think she still has some darkness but i think love is killing the darkness

oooh i love the idea of her turning evil and killing Enkir(damn him) and then though the power of love she'll pull through and banish the Nameless One forever!!!!!! but first she'll be recruted by the nameless one as she's such a powerful bard and once she's in his faith cadvan will come and show her how much he loves her and then she'll go and kill him using love and her lyre. and of course she'll steal the nameless one's lyre and then cadvan will play it and the nameless one will die forever!!!!!! but then she'll find that the nameless one has made her evil and she'll make cadvan kill her and he will do that and she'l die and he'll also die through unhappiness for her death.

aaah i love treachory...
