Transitions

What does everyone here do for transitions in their works?
If I am staying with one character and transitioning throughout a series of events it just comes naturally, but what kind of options are there for transitioning between different characters, or to signify a passing of time (without saying time passed).

To show time's passed, I use scene shifts, the chiming of clocks, lighting lamps, a discrete knock on the door, sunrise/sunset, the chirping of birds...

or the old standby - waking up, checking watch/clock, scream, frantic dressing (including someone falling down at least once) and running out of the door in almost a blind panic, with or without something jammed in the mouth as they rush for the bus/car.

I try to save POV changes for chapters.

In a short story I put an extra space in the break, and start with a new paragraph (most of the time). Then you start building your new scene in the new paragraph.
