cartooooooooons are awesome. Don't ever neglect cartoons, they require a specific inteligence, to say the least. I certainly haven't neglected them :D  however it does help to know a tad bit of anatomy first...Actually up until 2 or 3 years ago I only drew cartoons, seriously. Besides, how do you define cartoon? It's a broad term, these days...

aw don't worry :D :p I'm jus' joking around :) It's very healthy for an artist to explore all different types of art, and it reveals sides of yourself that you may not have known about!

Thats ok lol.One of my friends brought in a couple of her manga books today

It would take me 554832035 years and a day to get to that-and it was a beginners book!I hadn't realised how many different pens and equipment you could use for it all!:o
Am i alone in being someone who can't draw by instruction-ie drawing circles and lines then filling details in later?I just look for small simple bits to draw rather than all the planning and measuring.

AAAARGH!!! INSTRUCTION BOOKS MUST DIIIIEEE!

sorry couldn't help myself :o

the thing is, if instruction books don't work, then that probably means that it's not the right one...self-practise is better sometimes, I think...all those lines and circles are tricks that come naturally later...for me at least. besides, life drawing comes first and foremost if you're trying to draw realistically, a mistake I repeatedly make, since there aren't any naked people handy :D

however there are some types of instruction books thatwould help you a great deal, drawing on the right side of the brain (an excellent book) will go a loooooooong way. It's a technique book, I've only started it (it's too late for me to use it, I guess) but it's really ingenious, and comes highly reccomended, a classic that has stood the test of time.

I was just kiddin too.
I agree
ALL INSTRUCTION BOOKS MUST DIE!
I don't like them with all the equipment and stuff, you only need that for really reallly good manga, which is a waste of time if you make 1 little mistake. Then u have to start all over again!
if u can't use circles, use different shapes, that's the way I do it, maybe it will work for you (all circles must die too).:D
