What series/author is this??

The author is J.V. Jones, and the series is called The Sword Of Shadows, it is exceptionally well written... so far, this is the second book, the first one is called A Cavern Of Black Ice.

JVJ has also written a series called The Book Of Words, and a single stand-a-lone book... The Barbed Coil, her best book so far IMO.

Ooo, finally I got something early! Bought the book the day before yesterday, even though it had been available there for a couple of days already.
