Now that it's been mentioned 3 times, I need someone to explain it to me... Donnie Darko?? I know a lot of people who seem to love this movie, but IMHO I remember thinking it was garbage, maybe one of the worst movies I've ever seen.. I'm obviously in the minority, but I can't figure it out.

It's not really a film that anybody is going to change your mind over - although you are the first person I've ever met or heard of who doesn't like the film, which is saying something.
For my part, I love the cast and writing, also the music, the setting. I like the way it feels like a dark cousin to ET in some ways, and a cross between a cynical 80s teen movie and a superhero movie in others.
The ambiguity of the story (at least in the original...I hear the director's cut spells it all out a bit too much) appeals to me too. While the general reaction after first viewing is "what the hell was that about?", for once it doesn't bother me. I generally dislike deliberately abstract films (Mulholland Drive, anybody?), but Donnie Darko was interesting in that it left me confused from a logic point of view, but completely understanding from an emotional standpoint. I'm not sure if that makes any sense!
So, yes, that's why I like it. :) What exactly didn't you like about it?
