I quite like Arkan, I'm not gonna go a ranting about how he "actually means well" cause he dosen't, he just wants the song! BUT he's still awesomly cold and yet polite!

I've got mixed feelings for the Winterking. I can't really judge his character, though, because he's Elidhu, and thus not bound by human ideas, laws, limitations, etc. It's like trying to understand a storm. Some people might hate a storm, because it can be loud, frightening, and destructive. But others might welcome it, because it provides water for plants, humans, and animals.
Although he did leave a horrible first impression.
I seriously cried when I thought Cadvan had died. That was awful. But then I remembered something I'd seen in the appendices for The Naming/Gift: a few of the "referenced books" listed in the "Notes for the Appendices" section were written by Maerad and Cadvan. (Don't ask how I noticed this :p)
But anyway, that sort of tipped me off. Plus, I flipped to the back of the book.

ANYWAY! Back to the subject: I think Arkan would be an interesting character to expand on. Perhaps he could become an ally later on?

In the riddle, when Ardina rescues Maerad from Arkan she actually says that she has "my own reasons for helping you" which kinda hints that she has ulterior motives but i think that she's still 'good' because she calls Maerad her daughter and sister throughout.

On the Arkan thing, you gotta remember that he got banished from his home by sharma so maybe he just forgot how to be nice by the whole 'cant feel anything' thing. I would like to think that he does love Maerad too because he makes the flowers all over the palace for her and when she runs away, although he's all stormy, when he tries to talk to her he's all gentle sounding and sad:(

i kind of agree with that. he seems to genuinely have some feelings for maerad, but perhaps he was away from other people for so long that jhe doesn't really know how to express himself without holding her captive

i guess i like and dislike him at the same time. he's an interesting character
