Cadvan is so calm and rational, it's too hard to make him angry, he'd never fight her! Personally, I think Maerad would fight like a terrier if sufficiently enraged, all fury and claws and teeth. But she'd only fight like that against Enkir or someone...

P.S- don't forget that

Maerad can turn into a wolf and hamstring him!! ;)

i always like the book best that i´m reading at the moment or that i read last. so right now it´s the riddle, and then i´m going to read the gift again, and i will like it better until i read the crow, or the riddle (again)
i have a very bad memory so i have to read a book at least 2 times to remember half of it... ~.~

and about the fight...i also don´t think cadvan would fight maerad...i think before she had the time to get really angry, he would say something that would just make her think about what happened...he´s so wise... ^.^

I love both of those books so much! But if I eally had to choose, I'd pick the Gift, mainly because it was really special to me, it introduced me to the world of fantasy. And also because I didn't cry in the first book...okay, I cried a little when Dernhill died, but I cried soooo much when

Cadvan 'died'!!! (I'm sure all you Cadvan-lovers out there would understand...)

But of course, it was also a very happy moment at the end when they met up with each other again! :D

----------------------------------

Maerad and cadvan in a physical fight? Nah...Cadvan is too mature and sensible, and not to mention totally-in-love-with Maerad to hurt her...

i love tolkien. nd so wot if he helped influence ur UNIQUE and WONDERFUL wrk. :D

Yes - no elves, hobbits, dwarfs or ents in sight! Not even a magic ring! But to be fair (which sometimes I like to be :) ) there are legit comparisons. The whole translation conceit was stolen from Tolkien, as are the appendices, though I've updated them to contemporary academica. And my approach to the writing is taken from his wonderful essay, On Fairy Stories, where he talks about the realness of bread and stone and stars that can then underline the realness of the marvellous. And there are little tributes sewn into the text: probably the most obvious is the Bard Tulkan, who wrote that marvellous poem about Ardina and Ardhor: which eagle eyed Tolkien geeks will of course recognise as having the same rhyming and metrical patterns as the song of Beren and Luthien in The Fellowship of the Ring...

But I think what most peeves me about this is that there are many other influences in The Gift as well, equally as important, and because I've been upfront about the Tolkien stuff most of the Tolkien-ripoff people only mention that...!

Ok, end of author whinge...because actually, it's not as if it really matters... ;)

I have been trying really hard to decide which book I prefer. The Gift? The Riddle? The Gift? The Riddle?

Argh, it's so hard!

I love The Gift because it was the first book and during that bit with Enkir in the court, I was totally wrapped up and stayed awake till three in the morning to finish it.

But I love The Riddle because it has the Maerad/Cadvan bits and because it's so sad and so lovely at the same time and it sets out the scene for the other books.

And I adore the first four chapters of The Crow, I think they're lovely! :o

I love them both! But if i was REALLY forced (!!!) to choose.....i would have to go for the gift...just for the simple reason that that was the book when maerad and cadvan met. But i like the riddle just as much because thats when m&c began realising that they (reeeeaaaaallllllyyyy) love each other deep down.
*gasp gasp*
Its too hard! I've changed my mind again now!
