This is like something from a SF novel:

In fact, does anyone know of a story with a similar premise?

Man....I was going to write that one. Someone beat me to it, and did it for real.
I'm bummed.
At what point does sf writing become superfluous?

That's a good question. Will certain topics in sf one day become just a part of the normal tapestry of life, or will they always have that "what if...?" quality?
Cyberpunk is a good recent example as lots of this may already appear dated and mundane, but it can still read as exciting and speculative in the hands of the right author. My point of view is that a good book will always be a good book.

Ropie said "A good Book will always be a good Book". Yes, I think that is true. Certain books stand the test of time, and can always be found, and others die a quick and deserved death.
For example, Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes is still being read today, while many books of the same era a long forgotten.
H. G. Well's War of the Worlds, in nearing 100 years old but it still read, and some SF from the forties is no loger read.
Some writers are just sillful enough to write things that can be read and enjoyed by a wide audience.
