Hi, I haven't read much Scifi, in fact I've only read Dune series(love it!) and some short stories by Asimov, George R.R Martin e.t.c
I'd like to read a fantastic scifi novel/series that is not too hitech(tecnical terms, complex advanced 7-syllable names for races/planets/spaceships e.t.c)
In short, I'd like to read something a little more "downtoearth"(hehe) scifi.
I like deep and likable characters, character drivven stories, plot twists.
I don't like the typical action packed novels with empty characters and all plot.
I've been wanting to read Tuf voyagin(R.R Martin) and Hyperion(D.Simmons), so they are already on my reading list
any ideas.

For strong, character driven novels I'd recommend A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M Miller or Sirius by Olaf Stapledon.
For plot twists I usually find short stories are better vehicles: I've not read a better plot twist than that in The Tunnel Under the World by Frederick Pohl ;)

Sociological SF = Ursula K. LeGuin. I'd recommend starting with "The Left Hand of Darkness." It's all about the character, baby! :D
BTW stencyl, isn't "Altered Carbon" by Richard Morgan (which I really enjoyed), very violent action-thriller-type SF? I mean, I don't really see it being character-driven, ya know? :o

Judging by a few of the titles you mentioned, you'd probably enjoy Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny. It deals a lot with Gods in middle-eastern mythology and has amazing characters as well as great plot-twists. George R R Marting called it "One of the 5 best Sci-Fi novels ever written." And with only around 300 pages it's not a long read.
Certainly viewed as a classic in the field of Sci-Fi ;) and one I will deffinately recommend. It was recently released in the Masterworks Edition, so finding a copy shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the recommendations.
And I checked out the recommendations thread, but it was a little too much for me, and I kind of felt I needed some more spesific recommendations, I have a pretty narrow taste when it comes to scifi

LOL.... due to the fact that I'm not very well read I used to recommend him to everyone :p though from what Generalbassist outlined in his first post I don't think Macleod has a place in this thread

Gateway by Frederik Pohl - great characters, intriguing set-up and a killer ending with very little jargon :)
