Retelling of Norse Mythology

Back in the 80's I read the first book in a series that was written by a Scandinavian author with a long Scandinavian type name. The book retold the Norse Mythology in a way that was a little more modern and believable. For example, instead of using the normal begining to the Norse mythologies (you know, the thing with the cow), the author instead had Odin & Co. starting out as beings of pure energy, wandering the universe, until they discovered Earth.

I remember that after I read the first book, I looked for the second one, but found that it hadn't come out yet. Anyway, the years went by and I totally forgot about it. I have no idea what happened to my copy of the first book, either.

Does anybody know what series I'm talking about and/or who the author is?

Maybe the book you are talking about is The Hammer and the Horn by Michael Jan Friedman? There are three books (The Hammer and the Horn being the first) in the series although I don't think the trilogy itself was ever titled. The main character is the Norse God Vidar. Does any of this sound familiar?

No, I don't think that was it. The author had a very long, hard to pronounce Scandinavian name. Thanks.

I've been breaking my head over this one for over ten minutes but it's not coming. It sounds very intriguing and I think I've heard something similar a long time ago. But alas. Thor Heyerdahl?

The thing with the cow?

Norse mythology says that in the beginning, there was "Ymir the primeval giant and the cow Audhumla. The cow's milk was Ymir's food. While Ymir slept his under arm sweat begat two frost giants, one male one female, while his two legs begat another male. ."

Give Norse mythology a read. It's pretty interesting.
