Just heard from Ansible that film director Robert Wise died on the 14th September.

Famous most probably for his non genre films West Side Story and The Sound of Music, his contributions to the genre have included one of my favourite SF films of all time, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and one of my favourite horror films, The Haunting, as well as The Andromeda Strain, and Star Trek the Motion Picture.

Guardian obituary HERE. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/obituaries/story/0,,1571205,00.html)

RIP, Robert.

Looking at the movies he's been involved with it, one could make a case that he's one of the greats.

HObbit:

The Day the Earth Stood Still is one of the best SF movies of the 1950's. A lot of younger fans have not seen it; they are denying themselves a real treat.

Mr Wise's direction was great; of course I also liked West Side Story tho it is not SF.
