I can't remember what book this was...or if it was a series or not.
All I can remember is that an older guy trains a young kid to fight. (like a lot of other fantasy books)
But the one part I can remember is that the older guy ends up fighting Gilgamesh.
I know that is not a lot to work with, but I'm sure if someone has read the book it should ring a bell. I mean how many books are there that someone ends up fighting Gilgamesh?
I read this back in the late 80's or early 90's.
Thanks!

I googled novels + Gilgamesh, got a bunch of hits, but I can't tell which of them might be what you're remembering, so I'll let you do it. :)

Could it be this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1931081964/002-0845179-1409631?v=glance) book by Charles deLint?

I already tried that. :( The thing is that the name Gilgamesh was not in the title of the book. He just ended up being one of the antagonists.
Thanks though. :)

Sounds like Last sword of power by David Gemmell. If not this one, then definitely one of his other sipstrassi novels.

I don't think that is it, but I will definitely look into it. Thanks!
Edit: Actually you are right! Ghost King by Gemmell is the one! Wow, I've read a lot of Gemmell's stuff but I hadn't read that one (well, I did years ago but couldn't remember it)
Thank you very much!

As Karza mentioned I'm fairly sure it's a David Gemmell book. There's a pair, Ghost King and Last Sword of Power; the first has the training and the second has the Lord of the Lance facing off against Gilgamesh. There's an omnibus version too; Stones of Power, which has both books in a single volume.
