It's true, contracts are difficult and you need to be careful about what is inserted. Clearly, if you have an agent, they can (indeed it is their job to) make sure you're getting the best and most clause free deal they can.
In the UK, organisations like the Society of Authors have a free contracts examination service for members so if you don't have an agent, there is expert help on hand.
But it remains beholden on the author to read very carefully, every clause and challenge anything that doesn't strike right - or at leastget an explanation that you are happy with.
