First off, hiya all. :) First post here - found this site thanks to the really fun contest going on - still alive after 4 characters have been revealed ... 1 to go!!!

Anyway, I did a search and nothing came up on one of my favourite characters and his ultimate fate, so here goes ... (warning though - possible spoilers ahead) ...

Davos is obviously going to be Azor Ahai reborn, not Stannis. There's too many hints, and it makes perfect GRRM sense to put up the 'obvious' (stannis), only to yank it away at some pivotal plot point.

On page 289 of the hardcover Storm of Swords, Davos is locked away in the dungoen and Melisandre comes to him. She is speaking of the prophecy, and says "Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt ..." Davos has just been rescued after the battle of Tyrion's Chain - you could say he was 'born again' on the sea (salt) in the midst of smoke (the pryomancers fire).

So if this is the case, when you do think it will be revealed? Is this book 7 (or is it book 8 now?) material? Or something that will happen relatively soon? Personally I think Davos is going to go along on an expedition to rescue the dragonglass from the mount of the First Men - he will find an old sword that he decides to keep. Then in book 8 (ie. last book of the series), the great battle is upon us and Stannis takes an unexpected wound and dies. There is chaos until Davos steps up, attacks with his old sword against impossible odds ... and wins. The sword is Lightbringer, at it's at that moment when hope is lost that he finally embraces his destiny. :D

Well let me be the first to welcome you to the forum! Nice people in here- as you'll discover soon enough.

Now, as for your Davos comments:
Lovely notion- it's actually the first time I've seen Davos' name in the ranks for possible Azors... I like it though. Gonna have to think about that one. It does assume, however, that on some level Millesandre is right, and I wonder if that negates the Old Gods' hold on the world? Or in the North, which is where Millesandre and Stannis, as well as a few Starks happen to be.

I was pretty sure Davos was toasted like a smore, after he arranged for Edric's escape. Doesn't seem likely that Stannis would allow that one to slide. There was reference to them burning a man at the stake, so to speak. Could have been Davos' son, as a ripe punishment for his disloyalty to Stannis. That would be something I could see Millesandre arranging. Hmmmm. Thanks for the mental meal!

But we'll see, eh?

I think the true Azor, whomever it is, will be revealed in Dance, not in Feast, so we have many, many moons to think on it.

That's an interesting theory. I just finished SOS and came away from it thinking that Davos was the man Melisandre burned before Stannis took his men north.

My theory is that Azor Ahai is either Jon Snow or Dany "Stormborn" Targaryen. Dany especially, given the fact that she gave birth to the dragons and was herself born during both a storm and a battle.

I hope Davos is still alive, though, whether he's Azor reborn or not.

Ah, hadn't considered he was the burned man. Here, let me check ... (flips through book) ...

Hmmmm. Ok, page 867 of the hardcover - Jon has just said to Stannis "Well why didn't you get here earlier?" Stannis replies -

"You're bold enough to be a Stark. Yes, I should have come sooner. If not for my Hand, I might not have come at all. Lord Seaworth is a man of humble birth, but he reminded me of my duty ..."

The way I read it - "If not for my Hand ..." means that Davos is still the King's advisor. He would have said "If not for my former Hand" or something, otherwise.

Also, I doubt Stannis' character is such that he would kill Davos for doing his job. (ie. To give Stannis good guidance) Stannis is not a hypocrite - He wouldn't say "Pip pip Davos! Great idea! I'm going to do it. But first I'll kill you for suggesting it." :)

I imagine the burned man was one of the conspirators who snuck Robert's son out that night. Actually, now that I think of it, I'm fairly positive it was the *old* Hand ... the one that was locked in the cell with Davos for a while.

As for my original thought - I also recall reading that the Azor prophecy said something about him being reborn from 'humble beginnings'. I'm going to have to ferret that statement out. :) Because, as Davos keeps saying, his beginning don't get much humbler. *grin*

Welcome to the forum, Jekyll. I absolutely agree with your theory about the Onion Knight, it makes perfect sense.

Excellent theory. I think there's a good chance you could be right.

Btw Regardless of who got burned at the end of Storm of Swords: Davos is definatly alive. I remember an update by Martin a while back where he mentioned he'd just finnished writing a Davos chapter... surprised I remembered that, but there you go.

Wouldn't suprise me to see Stannis doing exactly that: 'great idea, have a new title...oh but that doesn't absolve you from the Edric thing, have to burn you for that one'. Seems that's how he lost his fingers anyway! Hadn't thought too much about who Azor would be but that makes sense, and i hope Davos hasn't been toasted! If not him i guess the bonfire must have been his old Hand (fingers crossed)

I am glad to hear it, as I, too, enjoyed the Onion Knight for the most part. I'd like to see more of him. Since you've proven he wasn't fried, do you think his Edric-worthy punishment would be losing his last son? Would Stannis be so cold?

No. Davos has already lost plenty of son's in Stannis's cause and Stannis knows this. Furthermore Edric was not a son to Stannis, more a way to a means, so in my eyes (and hopefully Stannis) the punishment wouldn't quite fit. I dont think he'd even consider it. Then again thats just my opinnion, book released tommorrow - find out soon.

I think your theory is true, but I don't believe it.
Burned man is Alester Florent (Stannis's former Hand).
